Architectural Preservation Information
Homeowners
Homeowners seeking to restore or renovate older homes will find a wealth
of resources available through World Wide Web connections. In addition
to the links below, homeowners may want to peruse commercial sites. The
Faribault Heritage Preservation Commission does not endorse any vendor
or site, but a search with the keywords “old house(s)” is a
good place to start.
Some homeowners may occupy houses eligible for listing
on the National Register of Historic Places. Generally, eligible homes
are at least 50 years old and are without significant exterior alterations.
They must also be architecturally significant, be associated with a significant
individual, or be associated with significant events, activities or historic
patterns. National Register listing does not restrict a homeowner from
making changes to the home, assuming no federal funds are involved. More
information about the National Register is available from the Faribault
HPC (call 507-334-2222) or the State Historic Preservation Office.
Businesses
The City of Faribault Heritage Preservation Commission offers support
and information to the owners of commercial historic properties, including
those located within the Downtown Historic District. Business owners are
encouraged to maintain, restore, renovate, and recycle buildings of historic
significance. The Faribault HPC reviews building projects within the Historic
District to assure that they meet guidelines established to preserve and
enhance the historic character of the District. An informational publication
about these guidelines, the design review process and financial incentives
for building owners may be obtained from the HPC for a small fee (call
507-334-2222).

and information about National Register properties in the state.
The Preservation Alliance of Minnesota (mnpreservation.org)
PAM is a statewide, private, non-profit organization advocating the
preservation of Minnesota's historic resources. The site provides information
on preservation tax incentives, preservation funding resources, and
preservation materials and service vendors in Minnesota. It also offers
links to numerous state and national resources.
National Trust for Historic Preservation (nationaltrust.org)
This private, non-profit organization works to preserve historic buildings
and landscapes. The site has links to National Trust properties and
programs, and includes information for owners of historic homes.
PreserveNet (www.preservenet.cornell.edu)
This site contains comprehensive lists of professional and informational
sites related to historic preservation. Informational categories include
economics, education, employment, legal information, and preservation
awards.

The National Park Service maintains Links to the Past, a comprehensivesource
for cultural resources, including the National Register of Historic Places,
preservation tax credits, and technical preservation publications.
